In this moment of great uncertainty and upheaval, Up Close invites a series of artists and creative thinkers within the Shed family and beyond to contribute new artworks, discussions, playlists, and more, exploring what it means to think about the world and make art right now.
These digital commissions aim to continue to connect audiences and artists, building on The Shed's beliefs that access to art and culture is a right and not a privilege and that artists’ voices are essential in helping us cope with, process, and understand the immediacy of what we experience individually, in our communities, and as a society. With Up Close, The Shed’s role as a supporter and amplifier of creative ideas, underrepresented voices, and the broader cultural ecosystem of our city is at the heart of their response to this crisis.
While our favorite gathering places like restaurants, cinemas, libraries, and cultural organizations are closed, creativity endures and ties us together. Up Close relies on the proximity we have to our phones and computers as they connect us in more intimate ways, bringing us closer to the creative process, and to each other. It also offers artists a creative outlet and platform and, more importantly, a challenging new opportunity to push themselves to intentionally take on this new way of producing and presenting art.
Every other Sunday The Shed is sharing new content on their social media channels (@theshedny) and website. Though we may be isolated from each other, we can still stay close virtually.
